Wrapped carbon tubes on sale at Kytes and Fun Things.
I’ve used Skyshark 400 tubes for years for my diy backpack frames.
Jan 27, 2017 at 12:06 pm #3447399Thanks for that heads up, Daryl (and you too Daryl). I’ve been looking for a source of cheap carbon fiber tubes for some time. I should now be able to make some things that I didn’t know I couldn’t live without.
Jan 27, 2017 at 8:38 pm #3447457Thanks Daryl.
Curious, how “flexy” are these? I’m looking to build a zipshot style tripod.
Jan 27, 2017 at 9:16 pm #3447462Christopher,
The Skyshark 400s are the strongest and stiffest of the series. The smaller the number the thinner the wall and the flexier the tubing.
The sweet spot on deflection with the 400s feels like about 1″ at the midpoint. In other words, when I grasp both ends and bend it like a bow the humpy mid point of the tube is about 1″ away from a straight line drawn between the two ends.
I’m pretty sure the above technique is the world wide industry standard for determining how flexy things are.
Jan 28, 2017 at 2:55 pm #3447524I see what looks like carbon fiber golf shafts in thrift stores at 2 bucks each. Anyone purchased any?
Jan 28, 2017 at 8:12 pm #3447557Hey thanks for that Daryl. I think these will work for my project AND my budget. When does that ever happen?
If it’s not too much trouble I seem to remember you posting a while back about ferrules you use for these? I cannot find the thread though. Am I crazy or did you find the right ferrule fit? (tounge twister alert!)
Jan 29, 2017 at 7:46 am #3447579Dan,
I bought a couple. Haven’t done much with them. Removed club and handle and put a point on one of them. Would make a heck of a weapon. Very strong. The ones I have are tapered.

See quote below from Kytes and Fun Stuff website.
“<span style=”font-family: Helvetica; font-size: small;”>All 5PT, 7PT, 8P, P200, 300 and 400’s should use a solid 6mm or .240″ carbon rod.”</span>
They sell this rod on their website. They also sell hollow tubes of the same diameter.
Ferrule Daryl
Jan 29, 2017 at 9:29 am #3447584Oh. You use the ferrules specifically described to work with these rods, which I somehow missed entirely despite it being plain-as-day? Go figure.
Jan 31, 2017 at 9:02 pm #3448059Thanks for posting and looks like they could come in very handy.
