Hey everyone! Just finished my wind/bug jacket and thought I would share with you. I’m planning on making several more and hope to fine-tune the overall fit since it came out a little more boxy than expected. My apologies on the sideways picture. I can’t figure out how to get it upright.
Materials:
Blue .75 poly taffeta
Black .66 nylon taffeta
Weight: just under 3oz
Hi Lance
Given that you can often pick up branded wind jackets on offer for a modest outlay, I’m interested in the motivation behind this project. What are you looking to improve compared to the commercial offerings? I’m a fairly recent convert to wind jackets and am interested in picking your brains about how they could be improved…
Geoff,
I’m not necessarily looking to improve any features you’d get from a branded wind jacket, but rather wanting to make one equally (or close to equally) as good for a third of the price. I remember watching this video two years ago before I started sewing and hoped that someday I’d be able to make something similar.
I also plan to switch up the colors on future ones so I can have several color variations to choose from. Both for backpacking, but also causal wear.
The ones I’m trying to emulate aren’t super expensive but the savings is enough to try on my own.

I’m looking for a 35 CFM wind shirt and haven’t had the best interactions with EE’s customer service, so if you are looking to put one up for sale once you’ve perfected your technique, I’d be interested.
John,
I’d be happy to make one for you. I’m working on a few more right now so I could send you some pictures once they’re done. What are you referring to as far as 35 CFM? Is that cuben fiber?
It’s a measurement of breathability of the material. 35 Cubic Feet per Minute is considered the optimal breathability for a windshirt – most are much less breathable.
