david ..
i absolutely agree with you … when im night climbing i keep a second headlamp with me at all times …
if the main dies, you arent going to fiddle trying to change the bats in the middle of a pitch … not to mention if the headlamp dies you need another headlamp
anyways the point is if one is doing activities where the light matters, they should practice it in the “worst case” scenario eventually
just like starting and maintaining a fire in the rain or snow (when youll need it most)
with headlamps start with practicing changes in the dark … then if not under a shower, then at least in heavy rain outside (or a sprinkler) with no cover … go for a walk first in the rain or jump in the shower so yr thoroughly soaked and blindfolded (both makes a BIG difference)
imagine your at the peak of an easy scramble (not too much cover), the descent takes longer than normal, it gets dark, and the nice candian rockies rain and thunderstorms roll in with heavy winds … and some idiot forgot to put a fresh bat in yr lamp since the last time (hey it happens)
;)
