I broke a GG LT3 hiking pole on a trip last weekend. Broke it near the handle (see pics). Other than the break the rest of the pole looks fine. I figure someone who’s into MYOG with smaller children might be able to make a smaller hiking pole out of it for their kid(s). Anyone interested?

Dang Doug, you gotta stop trying to pole vault across streams!

Don’t be too hard on yourself Doug.  I’ve now snapped 3 GG LT4 poles.  I’m a big guy (270 pounds) and I can put all my weight on the poles without a problem.  They break when I’m heading downhill (remember the Pennsylvania mountains?) and fall.  I’m not sure how, but I always seem to end up falling on one of the poles as it straddles two rocks.  Snap and that’s that.

On my last trip on the Mid State Trail I slipped once and broke off the bottom 4 inches of the pole (including the tip).  I was able to extend the pole so that it was almost as long as my “unsnapped” one. Sure enough – I fell again and broke what was left of the pole in half, but at least it was the same broken pole!
