Jan 15, 2024 at 1:58 pm #3801590how do you get dropped off from train near calahan’s?
is there a train station there?
I see the train goes through a tunnel (#13) and there’s an abandoned train station. Site of a train robbery

Thanks. Just to the right would’ve been a few other tents (Big Agnes).
calahan’s?

No, my northbound Coast Starlight stopped at Klamath Falls, OR mid morning and then a shuttle to Medford .. which has an REI. After lunch, quick local bus to Ashland (#10 .. the express is only for residents), then after spending the night (Ashland is a tourist draw in its own right), I got a car ride out to Callahan’s (could hike but it’s a road walk). The Starlight going south doesn’t get to Klamath Falls until 9 if on time. So that would be a night there (nice little downtown btw), then have to do what I did regardless.
With longer days and usually pretty good conditions (well until SW “monsoon” or northern “smoke” seasons), .. I like doing summer trips via Amtrak (usually catch a plane to the nearest “hub”) and then local shuttles as not to worry about a car drive, will it be safe while I’m out?, etc.. I’ve read about and actual witnessed the after effects of wkd to section hikers getting shuttle cars stolen, car break-in’s, brake lines cut, .. all the cars lit on fire) though as a fairly recent movie goes “.. may the odds be in your favor ..”, but I digress.. Get tickets that are refundable if conditions change.
Going to have to shuttle once anyways on longer hikes, so may as well shuttle on both ends.
trail maintenance
Besides the group coming up from the south, there was a group coming from the north on the PCT then another crew from the north on the Whitehorse alternative.
Big difference in trails where the bikes can ride on the Melotius (open curves foe speeding bikes vs the typical tight corner for hikers).
