On two recent trips I’ve tried to make the Thanksgiving backpackers recipe and have been somewhat disappointed both times.

This recipe has been discussed here before, but if you don’t know what I am talking about, it is basically this:  https://www.rei.com/blog/camp/backpacking-recipes-thanksgiving-in-a-collapsible-bowl

The first time, I thought it was a complete sodium overload.  The second time, I left out the gravy packet.  I thought the salt levels where pretty good (salty but not overdone) but really missed the gravy.  Does anyone have an easy fix?

This looks great.  I have not tried it but if you wanted lower sodium there are low sodium stove top and gravy available.

that’s a good idea… I wasn’t aware of them, but they seem to be pretty available.  It’s a great meal that can be easily sourced at a grocery store.  The only problem with it (besides the salt content) is having a enough people along to eat everything.

I’m going to try it.  I’ll have my 10 yr old son along, my problem will be fitting enough in my pack.  He eats EVERYTHING..

Looks to me like the primary sources of sodium in that recipe are the stuffing, gravy (likely the worst culprit) and the canned chicken. Should be simple enough to find low sodium versions. FD chicken?

Yeah, the canned chicken makes it easier to source out of a grocery store, but FD chicken would drop the weight and sodium content considerably.
