My friend just completed a research project on ceramic water filters, and it just made me so thankful to have clean water as a given in my life- even in the backcountry…
This is good stuff, but nothing new. We worked with Ron’s design 25 years ago to place 1000’s of these in rural Honduras.  We randomly cultured the water after placement in homes and found them to be highly effective. Unfortunately, they are quite heavy for backpacking! https://www.pottersforpeace.org/about-our-founder
I remember a stone water filter on display in the Oakland (California) Museum dating from the Spanish mission period (late 1700s to early 1800s), chipped from solid stone. It was nicer looking (more symmetric and smoother finish) than the examples I found photos of in a web search:
They would be even heavier for backpacking than the ceramic gravity filters.
