I recently purchased a used tarptent contrail in good condition, except for the stuff sack. The sylnylon is coming apart on the stuff sack where the drawstring is in a couple of places. Â I have sewn a few things, but my preference would be to just tape this back together. Â I suspect that most tape adhesives will not stick very well to the silnylon though, so before I experiment with various types I thought I would ask the smart folks on here. Â Tape I already have includes cuben from zpacks, tyvek, and 3m (scotch) transparent duct tape from a MYOG tarp.
I did a bit of searching and found a thread from a few years ago, https://backpackinglight.com/forums/topic/62362/ , perhaps Permatex Flowable sealant could be a tape substitute, or at least provide a bit more something for sewing to hold onto?  Or maybe there are other tapes on the market now.
thanks, Matt

what do you mean the silnylon is coming apart? Â Probably just best to replace the bag. Â The drawstring would probably quickly destroy any repair. Â Not that difficult to make a replacement or buy one
Nov 22, 2016 at 4:13 pm #3436931You can get a new one from TT for $5 plus postage. (under Extras)
Probably less expensive than buying tape.

The woven material pulled out from the stitching because of the stress of the pull of the drawstring. Â It is a small section, and I have some Permatex, so I will likely give that a shot for starters. Â If that does not hold then Franco’s idea sounds good, assuming the tarptent webstore is back online by then. Â I can’t access it from my home presently . . .

Nov 27, 2016 at 7:26 am #3437514I fixed a rip on my Hilleberg tent’s silnylon Kerlon fly using your standard ripstop repair tape and McNett’s silnet seam sealer. Both together work perfectly. As far as I know there is no repair tape which will work with silnylon as a stand-alone tape, not even the highly vaunted Tear Aid Type A.
