A couple of weeks into a thruhike I always experience the same phenomenom: My brandnew soft and cushy socks (I usually use Darn Tough or Wigwam) become stiffer and stiffer although I wash them in a washing machine with laundry detergent once a week while having a rest day.
Even back home where I can wash them with a long washing cylce and use fabric softener they stay stiff which unfortunately causes chafing on my feet.
Do you rinse your socks daily while hiking? My longest leg between washings was ~10 days and I had two pairs. I rinsed one pair each day and would hang them off my pack to dry as I hiked. I don’t remember any stiffness. Darn Toughs.
