Someone just spray painted large boulders in Denali. I don’t recall anything like that in 30 years at Denali. Far worse than tp, carved trees, or rock stacks, imo. Maybe carved trees are worse, can’t be cleaned up. Funny how some people just need to leave their mark wherever they go. Two of the elders in my family who’ve died recently wanted fully biodegradable packaging for their cremated ashes. Ultimate leave no trace.

Lots of trails in the Los Padres are helped out by cairns and ducks, and tape, too. I will usually leave a duck in a place where I went wrong, once I figure it out, to help others not make the same mistake as me. I don’t mind the art installations. I usually don’t see them far from trailheads. Actually I usually see them on the beach where they will be washed away. I suppose they would be annoying in touristy places, taking away from the natural beauty and any natural history information that is being presented. It’s not an all-or-nothing thing.

@Dan yeah that is stupid. Nothing to do with people stacking rocks.

Also… the fuel needed to burn corpses, the carbon released in the process, the manpower, the vehicles to move them, the carbon footprint to make the vessels….they all leave a trace, which is fine, as there  is no such thing as leave no trace. We can aim at leave “little” trace, that is it. Personally I would rather be buried up the hill with no casket.

It’s all about people knocking down the stacked rocks. :)

What are those funny rock structures? Understand the importance of rock cairns, who builds them, what they are and aren't for, and how to properly use them.
