About a year ago I started looking into Greenland as a destination for a couple of weeks of very remote hiking. I looked at the Arctic Circle Trail, and there were a few too many YouTube videos that made it look like the party that the Appalachian trail is turning into.
I’d like to get away. If you want to play your ukulele for me please do it within the city limits…..
Anyway, a few other places caught my eye in Southern Greenland. I have tickets, and if the corono- craziness ends, I’ll actually be able to use them for the first week of August.
In doing research and buying the only topographic maps I can find they reference “the classic Iglaku to Qaqotoq route”. Two or three times I found this reference “the classic Iglaku to Qaqotoq route”. It is always a reference and I never could find any detail.
I also stumbled on to other videos. One about the Eric the red trek and another low resolution of a video of the ascent of Mt. Killavaat.
It’s been extremely interesting as the satellite photos that are available are all older, and not that high resolution. Snow covers the ground for most of the year so have to kind of grab the photos from the summer months.
I also googled a lot of the names both in modern Greenlandic and in older Danish. This led me to a lot of things about new mining claims. It doesn’t for bode very well for the pristine environment, but a lot of these are very old and it seems like nothing is happening. I even wrote to one of the people who had made an application for a large Australian mining concern. He wrote me back and said I would not see any activity on the ground and that I would not have to worry about stumbling blindly into a mining operation. “The only thing you’re going to see there is ice and wind” he responded.
I know I’m half ranting because I’m quarantined, but I would like anyone’s feedback or additional source of knowledge. Here is the route that I’m settled on. It’s a two week route with a break in the middle for boat transport between the two trail heads.
