The Norrona Falketind Alpha 120 is a completely overlooked piece of gear in my opinion. Probably due to being 120 vs 60 or 90. Have started using this since last year and am completely satisfied. Uses Polartec Power Grid (micro —very light) and Polartec Alpha combination. Perfect alternative between a Patagonia R1 and Alpha. Though it would be just fine as a half zip, the full zip doesn’t bother me. Is great for quickly venting excess heat at different gauges if needed. Aids in taking off and putting on, as Alpha tends to cling to other fabrics. I’ll unzip halfway for this purpose. Has a very sport cut fit, (size as normal. IE: medium is medium) unlike the boxy “NorthFace” cut that every other company seems to utilize. Used during the Spring/Summer/Fall cold morning starts by itself with or without tshirt underneath. And in the colder evenings, with a layered system over the top. Effectively has long arms with thumb holes. Ships very quick to the US from Norway

+1… I have this hoodie and love it. I bought it b/c of the price (paid less than $75) and was surprised by the quality of it.
Jan 16, 2024 at 10:04 pm #3801720Thanks guys for all the opinions. I think I will get the 60. To clarify, my goal is to wear it under my wind jacket. I’m hoping the combo of the wind jacket and the 60 alpha direct might be similar in warmth to my Torrid alone. Just more versatile since I can use them individually if I want. The combo would be very similar in weight to the Torrid. I guess I will find out if this works.
I found the R1 PataGucci at REI and was very impressed. I’m just not a fan of walking around with one of their logos. Although I do respect them as a company and I think they’ve done some amazing things. Also, I am really tempted by the terrabone jogger as a hiking pant.
Jan 17, 2024 at 4:10 am #3801721The 60 and the Torrid are two totally different uses. The 60 will not be anywhere near the warmth of the Torrid for static use. Alpha is not very good for warmth if you are simply sitting around camp unless it is not cold. Everyone is different but 60 and a windshirt is going to feel cold below 50 and probably before it dips below 50. Likewise, the Torrid is not for use when you are hiking and building up lots of heat. Both items complement each other. It’s not an either or unless temps are too warm for a Torrid.
Jan 17, 2024 at 11:47 am #3801744I have the 90, but I’d say Baja bob’s assessment is about right. The 90 is maybe 3/4ths as warm as the R1 when under a windbreaker. I use a layer of mesh with it but sometimes the two together can get a little warm. I think Ryan uses 60 with the mesh, which might be idea.
I see the Terrabone joggers $30 off for the red. I think it’s their marketing strategy to always have 1 off color at a discount.
