Oh, and in case anyone is interested, here are a few of the jackets I made. At first I used Thruhiker patterns and kits but then I eventually learned to how to create my own slopers and draw out my own patterns. It’s not as hard as you would think to create your own patterns! It’s almost easier than trying to adjust an existing pattern, tbh. I also made a few other things: full zip insulated pants for snow camping, a synthetic quilt, a pack for my inflatable SUP, many, many mittens. lol

Thanks to everyone from back in the day and over the years who were so knowledgeable and helpful in posting here. I learned SO much!! This is such a great site for MYOG!

    1. This is a Whitney kit from Thruhiker. My first “final” version. I think I made four practice versions first. lol This is a GREAT learning kit, btw… I overstuffed this bad boy… 13 oz of 850 fp. lol 18 oz total weight. Very warm.

I added an inner zipped pocket for a phone and mesh drop pocket inside.

Also over-stuffed the draft tube to make the collar thick so the zipper wouldn’t poke into my chin. Pet peeve and why I started making my own patterns so I could adjust these things. lol

I tried to copy the Mountain Hardwear Ghost Whisperer cuffs, which have an elastic Lycra liner on the inside. It works well though I didn’t totally dial in the fit and finish as nicely as I would have liked…

    2. This is my own pattern, an early version. Basically a down sweater. Not so many pics of these… like after your first kid, you stop taking so many pics. lol This is a much lighter jacket than the Whitney… about 4.8 ounce of 800 fp and about 12 oz total weight. This was not really an ultralight effort…

    3. This is a later version that I changed to have pockets like a Feathered Friends Helios. Five ounces of 800 FP and a total of 12.5 oz. Fabric + insulation was only 9 ounces so it’s surprising how much zippers, pockets, bindings, etc start to add up!

    4. This one is 1.8 oz Primaloft. Not sure about the weight on this one, but about 7-8 oz.
