    Hi there!

    Been unemployed for the last year and totally should have done a longer thru hike, but my new job has first 2 weeks in July as a closing so that gives me 2 weeks to plan a decent little section.

    About me Eagle Scout, been on the forums in the past and have a decent base gear setup as long as I find everything. I’m 27, 250lbs at 6’3″ and from CT so that gives a local area for the hike.

    I am taking any suggestions and help.

    So – you’re looking for 10-12 days on the AT?  Is it your plan to section hike the entire trail or are you just looking for a good stretch?  To keep the logistics simple, I’d probably plan on starting where the AT is closest to you (perhaps the Bear Mountain Bridge – the lowest point on the AT) and then hiking either NOBO or SOBO.

    From your gear comment I’m guessing you haven’t been backpacking in a while, so it would be tough to predict your destination in 10-12 days.  I’d plan on touching base with my “ride home” after a week or so when you’re better able to guess where you’ll end.

    Thanks for the message Kevin.

    So I think I was going to do the bottom 100 miles of the Vermont, AT. Would be a great section hike I think. Tho I am kinda worried about how difficult it may be. Any information on Southern 100 miles of the Vermont AT. Im thinking essentially Killington to the Mass Border along the AT or in the opposite direction. That would give me about a 11 day trip doing about 10 miles a day and halfway refuel point in Manchester, VT. Any real reason to choose north vs south bound?

    I should I downloaded Guthooks App, and purchased the LongTrail node, which gives me a great section of the AT map and trail info.

    If you are looking at anyth ing pertaining to the AT, Whiteblaze.net is a valuable resource.

    And of course there’s the Long Trail!

    @Matt

    Thanks again for the comment, now granted the other half of the long trail that inst the AT is apparently super hard or advanced so avoiding that. I will have to check out whiteblaze.net

    How active is this site still, its been a couple years since I last posted? Just trying to figure out where to post and what not to get the quickest help xD I am essentially 2 weeks from heading out.

    I hiked that section south of Killington a few years ago and really enjoyed it. But then I had my trail legs as I had started in Harper’s Ferry. It is a nice section. Any section will be challenging when you don’t have your trail legs, so plan around 10-12 mpd. There is a good interactive map on the Appalachian Trail Conservancy site. Also http://www.atdist.com is good for calculating trail distances.

    Thanks, from what I can tell the southern side is easier, eventually I plan on doing the whole trek north to south, but have to do much smaller section hikes. Plus this was really spontaneous for me. I agree with you on the speed, I can walk a mile in about 15mins at a easy pace, so was thinking about 2 miles an hour so the 10 miles a day was great, but on easier sections I could definitely hustle a bit more.  My pack weight without food and water should be around 15 pounds
