Everest trekkers with rescue insurance are literally being taken for a ride by unscrupulous guides, trekking companies, helicopter rescue outfits, and hospitals.
In one of the scams, guides convince hikers with mild AMS symptoms that they must be evacuated immediately, using choppers and hospitals chosen by the trekking companies.
One trekker had his passport seized by the hospital while a doctor encouraged him to exaggerate symptoms so insurance would cover his stay.
Insurance companies suspect that they’ve paid many millions of dollars in fraudulent claims.
