I like carrying a light, frameless pack and I’m quite comfortable doing with weights reaching into the high teens. Around 20# it becomes less fun and at 22 or 23# I’m highly uncomfortable.
I have yet to find a framed pack that I like carrying. I have thought about adding something stiff to a frameless pack like a sheet of coroplast (fluted polyethylene) but never tried it. I haven’t had much luck with a folded or rolled CCF pad except with a Ridgerest rolled up burrito style but it uses a lot of volume, I don’t like sleeping on a CCF pad and it ends up pretty heavy as frames go.
I just saw this GS thread from Luke which shows a DIY pad using a hoop and stay from ULA. I’m wondering if anyone else has tried similar setups and if they have proven effective.
I too just noticed Luke’s myog frame sheet and was interested how he made it. I also do something very similar.
I have a ks50 frameless pack. I had Laurence sew in a couple pad holders on the inside. It nicely holds that carbon fiber loop and polypropylene pad from the ohm.
It has made it more comfortable to carry in that 23 to 25 lb range.
I also put that hoop frame in my day pack to give it a little structure. It’s a 25 l multi-pack from lite af.
Cheers Kona
