Hi all, I’m thinking of making a pair of down socks from a Costco down throw. I don’t need expedition-level insulation, just find that with age my feet get colder (home, camping, in general) so I figure the Costco down throw should be plenty. My sewing skills are pretty much non-existent, so I’m looking at the easiest pattern I can think of, which would be one seam up the middle top of the foot and up the front of the ankle and a second seam up from the base of the heel up the back of the ankle. Very similar to what Goosefeet Gear, Zpacks and EE do with their booties. Except…all of those commercial models also use a separate piece for the sole, so there is a third seam all the way around the base of the foot.

My question is: couldn’t I keep it simpler without sewing on a separate sole but instead just have the sole continue up both sides of the foot, wrapping over to meet at the top seam? What would be the disadvantage of not sewing a separate sole piece? Appreciate your insights.

Never mind, I just decided to bite the bullet and get a pair of GFG.
