New to hammocking. Recently got my darian dream hammock and i love it. I also have MLD cuben asym tarp. What are good lengths to make all of the tie outs? Ridgline and sides? Â And how do you tie it out along the ridgeline?
Aug 28, 2017 at 6:58 am #3487415I don’t hammock much these days but when I do I use a Superfly tarp, which is much larger than your MLD Asym. I’ll share my general thoughts on rigging but they aren’t specific to your tarp…
I like MLD’s thinner line for guying out to my stakes. It’s thin, doesn’t tangle and easy to tie/untie a trucker’s hitch from. One suggestion: leave one guyline long enough to run your tarp in “porch mode” over a trekking pole, stick or adjacent tree/bush for days with light rain so you have a dry spot to cook and watch the sunset/sunrise from.
My Superfly is rigged with zing-it at both ends of the ridgeline using this method with Dutch Stingerz. I really like this setup.
I’ve been thinking about using my hammock more lately. My tarp is very heavy and I’ve thought about picking up the tarp you have (or maybe something from ZPacks). I might rig a lighter tarp with MLD line on the ridgeline as well so that I could run it without the Dutch titanium bits.
Aug 28, 2017 at 7:06 am #3487416Oh. I just looked at the MLD page again and saw it comes with linelocs all the way around. I forgot about that.
I’d probably use those on the stake guyout points with Lawson 2mm glowire.
I’m not sure I would want to use the linelocs for the ridgeline. Just thinking out loud here: in order to use them, you’d have a loop in the end of the line and then carabiner (eww, something to lose/break) it around the tree or pull the line from the lineloc to pass it through the loop (too fussy/fiddly). You could tie Dutch Whoopie Hooks (just a couple grams each) onto your loops but I’d worry about about wearing a hole in my tarp while it’s packed up.
Please share what you end up with. I’m very curious.
Aug 30, 2017 at 10:16 am #3487866after much research, reading and watching plenty of different videos, i ended up going with the Dutch stingers and black reflector line for my ridgeline and keeping my tie outs with the line locs. Thanks for your input.. appreciate it very much.
