I posted on the Philmont Scouting forum asking for updated Philmont Gear List to be added to this thread.  Even if your not going to Philmont this summer we would love to hear from you.  I know that there are folks who are already planning for their 2017 Treks, and of course the advice and list from the 2015 attendees would be welcome.  After each camp out we always ask our Scouts and Scouters two questions about their gear.  #1 “what did you bring that you wouldn’t bring next time?, and #2 “what did you not bring this time that you would bring next time?  If you’ve been to Philmont before please help us out with adding that info to any Gear Lists that you post.  Thanks in advance for your help!

Brought/Wore in 2013 that I will not be bringing in 2016:

4.75 lb Black Diamond Mercury 75 liter pack (replaced with GG Mariposa, (which will be replaced with a Zpacks Arc Haul by Philmont time))

Monarch Bipod Chair (replaced with small piece of closed cell foam)

Heavy (really heavy!) Cabellas boots (replaced with La Sportiva Ultra Raptor trail runners)

Self inflating Thermarest (replaced with ExPed Hyperlite Synmat MW).

Cheap Walmart down Sleeping bag (replaced with EE down quilt)

Shared REI Halfdome tent (long version), (replaced with 1P DIY 29oz (including stakes) double wall tent (similar to a Cirriform and Protrail))

Used in 2013 and will use again this year:

    Liter sized “disposable” water bottles

Lightweight trekking poles (indispensable for 47 (in 2013) and now 50 y/o knees and will also need for shelter this year)

    Primus Remote Canister stove

As a group, we brought 3 cup sized Rubber Made “Take-a-Long” bowls with lids and Reflectix insulators.  This was carried as group gear.  We will do this again.

In 2013, my base weight was well over 20 lbs.  I can’t remember the exact weight, but my starting weight including 4 liters of water and 4 days of “Phil-food” was close to 40 lbs.  This year my big 4 (pack, shelter, pad and quilt) is sub 6lbs and even with my share of crew gear, I should be around 12-13 lbs base weight.  As an added bonus, I personally will be about 25 lbs lighter than I was in 2013.
