    @lundquistas

    Anyone been able to compare these too and have any suggestions? Trying to decide between the two of them for my JMT. There main use will be as my active hiking layer when it’s cooler and than a midlayer in camps when its cold. Thanks!

    What time of year are you doin the JMT?

    Most of the time the cap thermal hoody is perfect.

    Note:  Capilene thermal hoody (8oz) + Luke’s ultralight vest (4oz) = Same weight as R1 hoody.

    If you want fleece for wet conditions, I think a cap thermal hoody + montbell chameece vest =  ~Same weight as R1.

    Dont get me wrong…I do still love my r1 for winter and sometimes shoulder season.

    I’m doing it in late Juky early august…was potentially bring a stoic hadron down jacket along with a mint bell rain jacket…overkill?

    If there’s no snow on the ground I think the R1 Hoody is too warm for hiking. I also think it is too heavy to carry just for camp use.

    The Cap4 Zip Neck on the other hand I’m happy to carry and use the rest of the three seasons.

    I actually do not like the Cap4 hoody because the hood is very unpleasant if it gets wet from rain or sweat and isn’t being worn. If I am going to wear a hooded layer like this it’s usually cold enough for the R1, and if it isn’t a Buff or two will do the trick nicely and be more versatile.

    Definitely the Cap thermal weight for July/Early August.  That and your hadron should cover you very well.

    Not or sure if you already bought your cap hoody…but the MEC T3 hoody is nearly identical but ~1oz lighter.  And it’s cheaper.  Shipping from Canada is expensive though.

    I can’t imagine taking an R1 onto the JMT unless you have skis on your feet. I think I wore my cap 3 baselayer once, while slogging up Whitney at 4 am. Carry a light shirt, light baselayer, windshell, and down jacket and you are set.
