Hope that link works. Just a quick overnight trip with the kids to an undisclosed location in NY. The trails are open but I would rather not say where exactly we are because there is definitely more people then usual escaping to the trails.. Mostly within a mile of the trail heads.. The deeper in we hiked.. Was more solitude and enjoyable.

Thanks for sharing. Looks like your kids enjoyed the campfire.
    Cheers.

Lol. Yeah.  We don’t usually make fire, unless it’s winter time or needed.. But decided last minute to stoke a little something to end the night.. And the ring was already there, though it was a short distance from our actual campsite.. Made for a nice nightcap.

I’m guessing here, but this was probably your first trip in quite a while where you didn’t sleep in your beloved hammock…How’d that go for you?

I have twin girls (13 years old) and we had to postpone our spring trip because of the restrictions, but they’ve been advocating that they’ll sleep in my double hammock instead of in a tent this trip.  We’ll see how that goes!

Hahaa.. yes.. long long time since i have slept in a tent and not my hammock.  My kids usually sleep in their hammocks also, but we all agreed for this trip to hit the ground. It was supposed to rain all evening and night, so we figured we could all spend time in the tent together,  where as with the hammocks.. we would just pretty much be laying around, lol.

Also i wanted to be able to pitch the tent at that sort of spot.. near the ledge with some views and if we only had hammocks we would have been a little further back and in.

And!!!… after many many many years, all it has taken is the near end of world, but my wife has claimed she will come on a backpacking/camping trip and spend the night out there.. and my oldest daughter.. bemoans.. will also be joining us, so i wanted to test the tents out before i bring them for a night.

Good luck with the twins in the hammock!! Hopefully they take to it !

My youngest daughter and my son love the hammocks and they enjoy using Dutch Chameleons with the spreader bar.. at least they can lay there and still chit chat and cause trouble.

I thought it might be that you didn’t want the kids to sleep in hammocks and you had to suck it up and sleep in a tent too so that they didn’t cry “not fair – you get a hammock”.  The threat of rain makes sense – Even an 8×10 tarp gets really small for 2-3 people in blowing rain.

The girls have napped in hammocks when we were car camping, but have never spent the night in one backpacking (they usually sleep in my Lunar Duo).  We’ll see how it goes and I’ll be sure to post photos!

My summer hammock is a Dutchware Halfwit – I’ve found it to be the best combination of light weight and bug protection for me.  I have a full bug net for my other hammocks, but it’s a bottom-entry and just not as convenient.  Also – I really try hard to not get out in the summer when it’s buggy (or hot).  I looked at Dutch’s Chameleon when it came out but never pulled the trigger.  I didn’t realize he now offered a spreader bar option.  I’m lucky enough to live about 6 miles from his factory (about 2 years ago he moved from what was his “shop”).  If you’re ever in Lancaster PA it’s worth a stop to see his operation – he loves to show off and give tours and you’re likely to see some stuff in development that will be hitting his website soon.

“Halfwit, …. Chameleon.” Why is it that the names of hammocks are so much more interesting and whimsical than the names of tents.
