Krakaeur has a new theory. The potato seeds McCandless was eating developed a mold that poisoned him and caused his death. Not much different than the old theory.
Interesting how some people hate McCandless
What’s interesting about this, is it says Krakaeur went to bus with Roman Dial who posts here. Wow, you’re famous, hiking with Krakaeur : )
Outside online sends me email frequently, Free. Occasionally good articles.
May 10, 2016 at 7:41 pm #3401658Thanks for posting…I listened to “Into the Wild” and enjoyed it but, I’m afraid, I fall into the camp of not feeling too sorry for McCandless. He would have been a great candidate for “Alone” (see the History Channel).
At this point I don’t really care what actually killed him…If you play dodgeball on a freeway does it really matter which truck hits you?

+1
McCandless died of starvation. He had to resort to eating dubious roots, seeds and tubers because he couldn’t find anything else.
Krakauer’s quixotic quest to find out precisely which seed killed him is what I find bizarre—I can’t believe Krak’d has yet another theory and that Outside continues to indulge him. I guess the economics just keep on working for both of them.
So I guess we’re to infer that Krakauer is going to do a story or book on Dial’s son? Well this seems to be his niche.
May 10, 2016 at 8:48 pm #3401682National Geographic is airing a six-part series on Roman’s search for Cody beginning May 22.

Yeah, I agree, it is a quixotic quest. But I still find his work interesting. And Into Thin Air. And his latest work about that Mormon cult who’s leader was convicted of having sex with children of the church so is now in jail. The church still considers him their leader and is in cognitive dissonance about the fact he’s a child abuser.
It seems like Candless was pretty good at figuring out how to survive as long as he did, and was possibly close to surviving. I don’t consider him a role model though, more of a tragic character to learn from.
