Very open-ending, brainstormy thread here. Our plan this summer has been to go up to the PNW and hike in Oregon near Mt Jefferson during the eclipse, plus going to Olympic. However, the smoke is making me wonder about that idea and I’m thinking of seeing the eclipse from near Lander Wyoming instead, and doing a backpacking trip somewhere else.
We are pretty open on where this could be, but I’m not sure about the conditions in various parts of the country right now. PNW looks smokey, and I heard firsthand that the Missoula area is really bad right now too – so it sounds like smoke all over the place in the northwest. Colorado has had a good monsoon from what I understand, so it is probably pretty good. I don’t know much about Wyoming and the Wind Rivers, although it sounds like they had a good snow year so the mosquitos are probably pretty bad. Or there’s the Sierras if we go a little farther afield. Any thoughts on what area’s at it’s best right now?
