Of the 20+ quilts I’ve made, not a single one has been the same design.
I have to admit that some have not been the best design or at least not the greatest way of making the quilt. However, pushing boundaries and designs into something that does work very well is what I’m after and there are some things I’ve learned that are even better than what mainstream uses.
I have been trying to figure a better approach to a wearable quilt for a year or so. Â I just made a standard wearable with head hole in the middle for someone and it got the ball rolling for my design.
So this is more of a bag as you slide into and it is encoded up to your armpits. Â Your arms do not go in this part thought.
The bag separates around the armpits and snaps together on top of your shoulders. And of course the arms are attached like that of a jacket. I’ll have the arms extended about 4″ past the hands and leave it open with a drawcord. I can just pull the sleeves to my wrist and tighten the draw cord for it to be worn.
The bottom will also be closed with a draw cord so it can be pulled up and be worn.
On top of all of this, will be a detachable 2.5 ounce climashield layer (with just a fabric layer on the top). Â Looking at having the bag be rated for 35* without the climashield.
If all goes well, this would be the bag/ quilt (whatever it is) I use for my PCT hike.
I’ll get some pictures up once I get it into the later stages of being made.

Make that a 40* by itself with a 3.6 ounce climashield layer. Â Better for desert nights. Â May even go with a #3 zipper on the bottom about 48″ (from the top) so it still acts as a quilt. Â It depends on if I want to keep it a 35* or not.

Aug 13, 2016 at 8:10 pm #3420075Is it kind of like this? (except obviously, lighter)
Sep 13, 2016 at 6:58 pm #3426028This quilt just became 2 separate layers that work together or each on there own. Â The primary layer is still the same.
The top layer will be a separate layer of 5oz Climashield encased in 10d fabric. Â This piece will go just below the hands and be wide enough to tuck under the arms or under you and cover you while on the side. Â This top piece will also now include Robic 7d on the bottom portion that will that the place of a bivy.
This way there are no connection points between the 2 and it can be used on its own.
Oct 13, 2016 at 12:20 pm #3430962- I have ditched this design.
Going for the new 1.4 WPB material from Ripstop by the Role for the  shell instead.
That way I can ditch the bivy all together.

when I send you secret prototype photos I expect you to keep them between us. What I am supposed to do with the “Hulk puffy” now? Man alive.

Oh dear. Have I killed your Top Secret marketing campaign with my careless disclosure? So Sorry!
But what’s with the half-padded half-length trousers?
Cheers

One thing to consider with that WPB material is that your inner fabric better be super breathable for this to work – I tried that a while back and found that the quilt wasn’t breathing enough to allow it to easily pack and unpack.  And this was with Propore as my shell, which is pretty breathable as far as WPB fabrics go.  I used some sort of taffeta I had lying around for the inner lining, which might be where I went wrong.
