Hello all, my name is Moze…really happy to have found this site.
Quick background:
I love hiking, I just don’t get to do enough of it (primarily due to current location), but I travel and hike when I can. I’ve hiked sporadically over the years, mostly shorter hikes (2-10ish miles), some ‘longer’ ones (59 miles being the longest). I had pretty minimal gear for these and probably wasn’t nearly as prepared as I should have been.
Long story short, I’m making a serious effort to get into hiking/backpacking and the more I read, look at gear, etc., the less prepared I feel.
I’m going to post in the gear section and would definitely appreciate any input!
Thank you all in advance and I’m glad to be here!

Where have you hiked/backpacked while traveling? Any favorite spots?
Where do you plan to hike/backpack?
Jul 3, 2017 at 11:49 am #3476825Thank you for the welcome.
My longest hike, at about 60 miles, was the Loyalsock Trial in PA. I’ve done a little hiking near Big Sky, Montana, Grayson Highlands in Virginia, Muir Woods in California, some around Sedona (going back there in September/October), small hike outside of Gatlinburg, small hikes throughout NY, some in Idaho. Too many were more ‘walks’ (under 3 miles) than what I would consider true ‘hikes’ though.
My favorite place by far, is the Idaho and Montana areas. I was pretty limited in Montanaa because the group I visited with didn’t really want to go on any hikes or for that matter walks due to the possibility of bear, which, hey – I understand. And I didn’t go by myself for the same reason.
Mt. Thielsen was my most recent and a bit of a bust. That’s another story…
As far as plans: Sedona is coming up and somewhere outside of Denver. Those are the only two currently locked in. We may go to Glacier National Park next year, so that would be pretty great.
Jul 3, 2017 at 12:59 pm #3476834I did the LoyalSock too. That was a tough trail. I still had a 30lb base weight when I did it too.
Jul 3, 2017 at 1:45 pm #3476838@riceonsuede It was definitely a tough one. Another buddy of mine and I did that one along with his Catahoula. Around three in the morning, I think it was, the Catahoula heard something, went out and came back with a face full of porcupine quills. We got the quills out and started our hike back around 4am.
