Hi everyone,
I’m an indie developer working on a new map app for backcountry offline use. I’ve been testing it myself, but would love to have more users try it out. It’s in beta currently (free) and available in the US on iOS devices.
Here is the link to the app (iOS only) https://testflight.apple.com/join/7aNBVs94
My goal for this app is to make offline a priority so its much easier to do things like –
– Look up stats for a specific location on the route. Super easy to get answers to questions like – How much further to the fork? What’s the eta to the lunch spot? How much daylight hours left? etc
– For established trails you can just tap on it to see stats. For more complicated routes you just draw on the screen with your finger.
– Lookup information for side trails like distance, elevation gain etc.
– Switch between routes easily even when offline
– Get your bearings using the AR feature that shows you a realistic 3D view of the terrain. Works really well when you’re in the mountains.
– For social media creators there are some play modes you can use to render a view of terrain. Some examples on instagram here @kijimaps
Hope I can convince you to try it out. Please do share any feedback!

A couple videos to show you what the app looks like –
Routing: Thousand Island Lake
Terrain Visualization: Colchuck Peak, Zion National Park, Enchantment Lakes
Thank you so much for your support!

Note: you’ll need to install the TestFlight app first to access the app. It’s currently free, but to manage running costs, I’ve capped the number of installs. If you encounter any issues with installation, please send me a direct message, and I’ll get you in as soon as I can.

If I have to look at an app to determine all this…well, never mind. Old guys like me used a map to determine “how much further to the fork” and all the rest.
I don’t go out into the wilderness to look at my phone. Ah well, did I mention that I’m a grumpy old guy? I already forgot.
p.s. I resent having to pay .99cents to open your downloads. Why do I need three dimensional imaging on my phone when I have the real thing right in front of me?

Aug 16, 2024 at 9:59 pm #3816527@jerry – I used to live in Washington so that Enchantment Lakes area was always a special one.
@jscott The app is not really meant to replace maps. It’s more for quick lookup. I always carry a map even with the app in my pocket (at least for non trivial destinations)
Also I’m curious where you’re seeing that .99 cents. Everything in the app is free.
3D imaging is useful in two scenarios –
(1) You’re sitting in your couch at home and you want to get a sense of what the terrain is like
(2) You’re out on the trail somewhere and want to quickly identify a feature eg a mountain. It’s hard to explain but it makes it so much easier to have that view on the map. It takes just a couple secs to get the name of a peak in front of you.
Thanks all!
Aug 16, 2024 at 10:50 pm #3816530thank you khris for your kind reply to my somewhat snarky comment. I was going to delete my message but it was too late! grumpy old boomer.
I see now how your 3d imaging can be useful. Go for it! as to the .99c price: when I clicked on your routing and visualization links, I was told I needed to pay .99 to proceed. I haven’t gone back to try again. Could easily be boomer user error.
Aug 16, 2024 at 11:51 pm #3816533@jscott No problem. So it turns out there may be an issue with those links. I’m unable to edit the post anymore but here are the links on YouTube –
Routing: Thousand Island Lake
Terrain Visualization: Colchuck Peak, Zion National Park, Enchantment Lakes
Cheers!
