Hi all… after years of settling for iPhone pictures of my backpacking trips, I’ve decided to go back to a point-and-shoot camera this summer. Has anyone used the new Canon G9 X Mark II on the trail yet? I prefer its feel and ergonomics to the comparable Sony P&S models and would welcome any comments about performance.

FWIW, I’m a 20-plus year backpacker but a middling photographer who usually shoots either in auto or a priority mode.

    Thanks!

I have been a fan of the various Canon S models and never really took to the Sony RX. The fact of a larger sensor at the same weight of an S is impressive, and USB charging, but the 28mm lens vs 24mm is a small step backwards. For the money as a lightweight trail camera, it looks very promising.

Short answer, no I’ve never owned a G9X.  It looks like a lovely camera.

My folks have the Lumix ZS-50 and for the money it’s a fine camera that’s a bit cheaper than the G9Xii, has a longer focal range, and viewfinder.

Thank you to @cameronm and @discopants for their input on this camera. For anyone wondering, Andrew Skurka has provided some thoughts about it as well.

It’s currently discounted by $100 at most online retailers, so I believe I’m going to give it a try. Will report back.

That’s a great value, especially considering it has a 1″ sensor and intervalometer  .

    Happy shooting.
