Hi, all-
Many of you have read my articles here, or encountered me in the forums. I’ve FINALLY finished my book, “A Conversational Guide To Backcountry Equipment,” and am running a Kickstarter campaign to crowdfund publication of the first edition! The link follows, or scroll below for more info:

The press release:
Outdoor recreation generates nearly $300 billion MORE in US sales than pharmaceuticals each year, but consumers have few meaningful ways to learn about outdoor equipment and clothing. We’re passionate about outdoor pursuits, but often face the extraordinary frustration of using products ineffectively. “A Conversational Guide To Backcountry Equipment” combines in-depth discussion with step-by-step photos, giving readers tools that maximize their outdoor comfort and fun. One respected industry publisher said this book was the best of its kind he’d seen in decades, but publishing it was too risky with a new author. A Kickstarter campaign runs until January 28, 2018 to crowdfund the first edition of the book.
Author Brad Groves started toting backpacks down trails and sleeping in the woods over three decades ago. He has worked as a professional outfitter and buyer in the specialty outdoor market for over a decade, leading community backpacking seminars and publishing articles ranging from theories of backpacking to methodical gear reviews. A life-long enthusiast of self-propelled outdoor sport, he’s begun designing and building his own equipment and apparel with a goal of turning the endeavor, Backcountry Bonsai, into a full-time business. In addition to working in fire/EMS, Brad has been a SAR team member and ski patroller. He holds a B.S. in Environmental Conservation and a M.A. in Writing, both from Northern Michigan University.
Brad captures nuance and explains detail in a practical way that readers can immediately use. Full-color images give visual learners easy access to complex concepts, and support the text in relating ways of using the body to effect change in equipment. The book is not, in any way, a catalog of specific products. It is instead fashioned to help readers evaluate whatever products they might encounter, while also learning to evaluate their own needs and budget.
The crowdfunding campaign seeks to produce the print-ready book, over 400 pages, in digital formats, a 6×9 perfect-bound paperback, and a limited run of 6×9 hardcover copies. It will not be printed or available unless would-be readers fully fund the campaign. For more information, or to back the campaign & pre-order a copy, please visit:
