Creating a bit of a stir in the greater 4-corners over the past 24 hours or so:  Strange Monolith

    strange monolith

According to my sources in Bluff, Utah; could be part of a worldwide conspiracy! I think the BPL gang can solve this one and with our international assets; possibly unravel the entire scheme!

    How about it BPL

Where did you find that Dan? Who posted it?

I think that’s probably close but about 15 miles too far east.

But that’s just my guess. Not sure there are desert bighorns on the east side of the river that close to Moab

One theory making the rounds is that it has something to do with this:

A reason our worldwide BPL might be able to figure it out.

But the menhir in question or currently in the news is

    1. Solo

    2. Much larger.

    My guess:
I think it was seen in Seattle about 20 years ago, then the ?owner? took it away. Now he has decided to have some more fun – LOLS.
In other words, it has no real meaning.

    Cheers

What is the purpose of Art?

Anyway it is apparently an artistic representation of a Menhir: A Menhir is a tall, vertically placed standing stone.

And possibly also called a Cairn!  The oldest megalithic monuments seem to be Cairns (named after the island of Carn off the northern coast of Brittany)

These stones are also mentioned in the Bible: “In the second narrative (1 Samuel 7:2–14), the Israelites defeat the Philistines, after Samuel has offered a sacrifice. Samuel puts up a stone in memorial and names it Eben-Ezer (the placename in the previous narrative resulting from this). This monument is referred to in the hymn “Come Thou Fount of Every Blessing”  Afterwards the name Ebenezer seems to have been applied or was applied to such standing stones in general. Eben is Hebrew for ‘stone of help’.

Watching some more videos, it’s a pretty poorly built piece and the ground was sawed, likely a gas concrete saw, (you can see the over cuts and hasty work) to place the monolith.

Yes turns out it wasn’t THAT big a mystery or that hard to get to. Heck I have a friend who drove there today.

Someone knew enough to know the public could check the flight plan of the survey; which was some special knowledge a few might have and the news article got enough people working on it so with that info they found it pretty fast.

There’s a sub-group over on reddit with over 400 members devoted to finding it.

There’s now a petition going round to keep the thing intact and in place.

It’s going to become a destination the way things are going.

    Screen shot from my computer.

    Moab Menhir

Anyone nearby (relatively)  wants to go pm me

I hope the petition fails, I hope they remove and toss the thing, and I hope they find out who put it there and fine them.

I’ll bet it’s been there for years and just burst upon the world with the news from the survey group otherwise it could’ve been there a long time with only a word of mouth type knowledge. OTOH the way it got figured out by the group on reddit makes me want to get anyone I take to a seldom seen rock art site or ruin sign a non-disclosure agreement.

This could become, and there have been previous instances of this sort of thing becoming, a pattern. We came upon a very artistic and skillfully rendered porno panel (kinda r-rated, multiple dimension; couple in bed watching a couple in bed video on a widescreen TV on the wall)  ) in an out of the way site a couple of years ago. This in an alcove with 900 to @ 2000 year old rock art. It was pretty alarming.

no that’s the same one. Look at it in Google Earth. Plus now I know at least 2 people that have checked it out.

At the rate this is going half the world will know where it is if half the world doesn’t lose interest, as they will once it’s not a “secret” Heck it made today’s NYT.

But anyway I guess you can’t verify it in google earth if you don’t know where to look so PM me Dan. I just don’t want to be spreading it around even though that’s beginning to seem silly.

According to the BBC, Google Earth imagery shows that it appeared some time between August 2015 and October 2016.

^^ So there you go. 4 or 5 years.

A dark part of my conspiracy minded psyche wonders at the carefully staged burst of ‘news’ about this ‘find’.

If a bunch of people start trying to drive out there and a bunch of them get into trouble then…..

“With all that trouble and traffic, gee whiz we just had to improve that road”

That crowd really likes building roads. You should see the parkway they built over the Blue Mts. (Abajos). Great and very scenic shortcut from Monticello to the Needles. @ 19 miles long. I usually pass another car or maybe 2 whenever I take it.   ;)
