Hello!
I have read a number of different threads on BPL about insulation and the amount of loft needed to achieve comfort at a specific temperature .
I have calculated that for my BMR, I will need 1.6″ of loft to make a quilt that will keep me warm to about 32 F. Accounting for the 30% degradation in loft, that would mean I would need to start with 2.4″ of loft.
Do others on here account for synthetic insulation degradation when making making synthetic quilts?
Also, I am planning on boxing the corners of my inner material to allow for 1.6″ of final loft. Has anyone else done this? Are their other techniques for allowing full loft in synthetics?
I got the idea from this post: https://hammockforums.net/forum/showthread.php/120764-Climashield-Underquilt-for-Daughter?highlight=uq+daughter
Thanks

Temp chart in the spec’s here: http://www.enlightenedequipment.com/prodigy
6osy Apex here: http://dutchwaregear.com/climashield-apex.html
Apex requires less loft for a given insulation than down. 2.5osy (lightest avail.) is 0.6″ thick. 6osy agrees w/ your temp and calculated loft (roughly). Degradation, or overstuff, is more of a down thing. I’ve never seen it enter the design of a synthetic quilt.
I wouldn’t worry about the boxed corners unless you feel like doing them. More important is accounting for a little extra length/width to accommodate the thickness at the edges. If you’ve got 2″ loft, make your pattern 2″ longer and wider. You’ll get 1″ hanging over the edge of the insulation on both sides/ends, for both the top and bottom shell layers (so 2″ all around the perimeter). Boxing the corners will only help prevent a smidge of compression at the corners if you tug on the corners.

Thanks for the advice and links.
This is an old thread, but this is where I am basing the degradation (not sure if it applies to Apex):

I was basing the loft on these:

Solid advice for accounting for loft. It’s simpler than what I had in mind and just as effective.
Is there a good thread/resource to read about Apex?
