I need a neck pillow, if I’m sleeping on my back or side in my hammock.
I used an insulated, inflatable, travel neck pillow for years. It was heavier than it should be and sometimes, still not so comfortable, even if I left the valve open and tried to ignore that hiss when I moved around.
I tried several inflatable pillows, Trekology, klymit and Outdoor Vitals
The problem was that instead of supporting my neck, they lifted my head up, arching my neck forward. Even soft inflated.
I have sleep apnea and do better with my head tilted back, like I were receiving CPR.
I read through a lot of good ideas here and decided on something a little different.
If these same type materials were used, I missed it.
The materials I choose were 1.0 Hyper D, uncalendared for the shell, and Climashield APEX, 2.5 for the cushion.
Both from Rip Stop by the Roll.
One of the employees there recommended the shell fabric and it feels great!
The first protype was a little too tight so I added a couple inches to the circumference. I haven’t spent any real time with it, but I think it’s going to be perfect for me.
I started by cutting the shell fabric, 18″ long by 14″, which after sewing the long edge, gave me a tube of about 13″ circumference and 18″ long.
The Clmashield I used was 42″ x 45″.
Sorry for the blurry picture. I didn’t catch that until I had finished the pillow, but you can see how I staggered it, so as to hopefully have a smooth surface on the outside.
I started by rolling the Climashield and stuffing, sliding it into the tube.
It can be tested at this point to see how it’s going to feel.
I sewed one end of the tube and shoved the roll of insulation down so I could try and sew the other end closed.
It didn’t go so well. I had to finish up with a little hand sewing on the corners and to add the grosgrain loop.
It ain’t purdy but it sure feels good.

my MYOG pillow is similar, except I used some more firm insulation from an outdoor chair cushion
I like the defects in MYOG projects, like hand sewn corners

True. Gives it character.
And it’s kinda cool to know you made it yourself.
Mar 10, 2023 at 8:31 am #3775391Do you just put it under your neck?
Mar 10, 2023 at 9:18 am #3775393Yes. When I’m sleeping on my back, it’s just the right amount of support for my neck. the back of my head rests comfortably on my softly infiltrated, insulated air matt.
When I roll over on my side, it gets moved up a little so the side of my face, head rests on it. It flattens out nicely that way.

Mar 10, 2023 at 5:15 pm #3775429That’s the cool thing about it, you can make it any shape or size you like.
