We’re doing a family road trip to ND/MT/WY very soon. ND is so I can visit my 50th state and my husband’s 49th. (We’ll car camp at a state park there then head west to MT). It’ll be me, my husband, our 7 year old and our dog.
The plans for MT include canoe-camping the upper Missouri (probably the White cliffs section for 3 days/2 nights), then almost a week in Grand Tetons. I’m hoping to get a walk-in permit for String/Leigh lakes (or another lake?) for a canoeing overnight there. We’ll board the dog in Jackson Hole while we explore GTNP.
I would also like to try to do an overnight in the Winds. I’m looking for something pretty short (3-4 miles one way) with water features, nice views and/or glimpses of the mountains. Bonus if the trail continues onwards and upwards so my husband and I can take turns going a bit farther in as a day hike.
I’m leaning towards Lake Louise, because it is short, and not too high up so the snow should be melted off. Silas Lakes also looks promising but it’s a little higher elevation and probably snowier or muddier. Are the bugs going to be horrible in early July? We’d be there around July 9th or so. I’m planning on bringing head netting and I can treat clothes with permethrin in advance. thanks!
