    @zloomis

I love my MLD Duomid, I just wish it was a few inches longer. I’m 6’1″ so with an XTherm and a 15 degree bag I’m constantly fighting brushing the side walls.

I like the simplicity of a mid for 4 stakes and a center pole. The only options I’ve found are dramatically larger so the space requirements are problematic, or are not a classic mid, and are more complicated.

Does anyone know of anything on the market I’m unaware of?

If u love the Duomid, why not go with the Duomid XL?  Its pretty big.

Tarptent Dipole-1 Li.  Roomiest and most comfortable (one-man) tent I’ve ever used.  I’m 6’5″.

Tarptent fan here too – Rainbow Li 1P. Incredibly spacious, no trekking poles required.

Have you compared it to ultamid 2? The ultamid is 3” shorter but 9” taller and 15” wider. You could mock it up with strings to compare. You said sidewalls, so is it the width that’s the issue?

Locus Gear Hapi. You can order a Grande size that is 10 ft long instead of 9. My DCF version weighs 13.5 oz.

You can probably get a Khufu in a grande length if you like the entrance on the long side.

Inner nets are longer than MLD too. The 90” length for MLD SolomidXL didn’t cut it for me at 6’4”. Bummer too because the DCF net was 8.8oz.

Thanks everyone! I have been considering the Duomid XL, the two things giving me any pause are 1. is it prohibitively large to setup in the woods? 2. Does it solve the problem? It’s wider but not longer, I’m assuming it’s wide enough that laying diagonally solves it?

I’m not a fan of any of the tarp tent shelters because I think they’re pitching is a little more involved than a traditional mid and I don’t like the built in struts.

I have considered the HMG Ultamid, it looks like a great shelter, but all things being equal I would prefer SilNy or SilPoly.

I had no idea Locus Gear offered custom “grande” options, that is something I will definitely investigate!

    Thanks again.

A mid style tent is does have wonderful simplicity but is more challenging to suit tall hikers because it only uses as single pole so the walls are going to slope in more to that single peak (compared to a dual pole shelter which can steepen the end walls).

The DuoMid XL has the same length (110″) but does have a 4″ taller peak height (59 vs 55″) than the regular DuoMid so slightly steeper walls that may add about 2″ of length at a foot off the ground. Not a big difference but it would help. Then it is also wider and the pole is offset towards the door, so you do have greater ability to sleep on the diagonal. I think you’d be accommodated by the DuoMid XL but it is quite a bit wider (90″ vs 68″) so it is one of the largest 2P shelters on the market by area.

One other thing to note is that it wasn’t that long ago that MLD increased the length to 110″ (from 100?) so maybe your current DuoMid has a shorter length where even a newer DuoMid would help.

As @Dan is so politely saying, a 2 pole shelter, like his Durston X-mid might be better if you are looking for something small and lightwight that still fits a tall hiker with thick pad and sleeping bag.

Set up is really about the same as a mid. (Stake out corners, insert pole(s), add extra stakes).

I have the regular (Non pro) X-mid 2 and have plenty of room in summer. Haven’t tried it with winter gear, but seems like it would be fine.

For a literal answer to your question, I have the HMG Ultamid 4 and it easily fits me, any pad, any bag. But, I suspect you want something smaller?
