My wife just ordered my Xmas present at Amazon, “Tofer” 700 fill ‘white goose down’ side zip pants for $93. plus shipping & tax.

I got size Large to wear over my fleece lined winter pants in camp. But I think they and my light down jacket could add another 20 F. to my 20 F. WM down bag & winter air mattress.

@danepacker – Are these the pants?  Given your “Grumpy Old Man” thread I’m not sure they’re right for you.  The last “feature” of these pants indicate that they are “a best gift for people who are afraid of cold and old people”…

    Kevin,

I’m struggling to connect my “Grumpy old man” post with why these down pants ‘are not right’ for me. Is there an implication I’m too old to use them for winter camping? Heaven forfend!

Anyhow the pants I got are very similar to these but called “Tofern” and have a “Nature Hike” label on the left side near the pocket. Look at the regular down pants W/O  side zippers and scroll down and find a smaller photo of the”Whole Goos Does” pants. That’s them.

I ski in and after setting up my camp I will put these down pants on over my fleece lined travel pants.

Sorry – I saw this in the middle of the night when I was unable to sleep.  I was trying to refer to the description that these pants are for those “who are afraid of old people.”

I actually ordered a pair like yours (not the ones in the photo) so thanks for posting!  I’m hoping to get out this winter and these seemed to be a really easy way to add lower torso warmth at a reasonable weight penalty.

    Kevin,

Not only a “reasonable weight penalty” but a reasonable price penalty.

I’ll keep this thread in mind as I use my pants and near the end of the winter I’ll PM you on how well or poorly my pants worked.

How is the sizing on these pants? Do they run small?

If you are willing to wait on delivery and take somewhat of a chance, there are really cheap down pants on AliExpress.  I suspect the fabric is thin so they must be worn either indoors or under a shell.

I purchased down mittens on AliExpress for my wife that appear to be made of the same fabric.  They are puffy and light and seem fine, but should be worn under a shell if you are handling anything.

Note:  be careful on sizing, read the charts carefully.  I’ve had to purchase XXXL on occasion, and I’m not that big!

Otherwise I’ve been generally happy with purchases on AliExpress (some outdoor items, a lot of misc stuff, including clock/watch repair tools).  A few never arrived and I got full refunds.  I routinely see identical stuff selling in the US for way more.

UPDATE: Normally for regular hiking pants I take a “medium” (34 waist) so I ordered these down pants Large. I found the size Large pants too tight at the waist when worn over my winter pants so I returned them. They actually fit like medium hiking pants so beware, they come one size smaller than advertised.

Returning Amazon stuff is dead easy. No re-packaging or cost. Just take them to a Kohl’s store or UPS after going to Amazon’s return site, entering the order number and printing out the pixelated code box. With that printout UPS or Kohl’s will accept them. I’ve understood UPS will accept them with only the order number. Money is returned to your card after the item is accepted at UPS or Kohl’s.

Anyway I ordered the XL size and expect them Dec. 31. (But deliveries have been notoriously slow so Jan 2nd or 3rd will be more likely.)

These pants are quite well made and even have an inside cuff area “ski abrasion patch”.

BTW, You can see my detailed review of these pants and a photo on Trailwise in their gear reviews.
