Long time lurker here on the forums. I’m planning a trip over July 4th weekend here in California and want to retreat into the mountains. Looking for a new spot but I have some newbies with me and they want to enjoy some good fishing any good spots?

You might get some helpful responses if you narrow down “here in California” and “mountains”. That does cover a pretty large area.

Also the snow pack this year might limit your options in the Sierra even in early July.

I recommend the western emigrant wilderness. Should be free of snow since its lower elevation. Expect mosquito apocalypse.

That perfect spot:  great fishing, not too many people, not too long a hike….doesn’t exist.  There are lakes in the Sierra that have great fishing, but most of the great fishing in the back country is more than a single day’s hike in.  Emigrant might be open, but once you get past Camp Lake, you’ll have to cross Piute Creek, and it will be roaring and high–possibly dangerous.  4th of July weekend is pretty early for backpacking this year, sad to say.
