A few years ago I got some fairly light shorts from a running company, but they are still not as light/compact pack size for the short length as my Dynamo wind pants. For example, they have a small zippered key pocket and fairly wide waist.

Recent trip was a great example. 2 day, 1 night bike touring, so I was wearing spandex bike shorts with a whammy for the ride. Once in camp, I want to get out of those. Mostly I was planning on long pants, for warmth in the am and bug protection both evening and morning.
But the whether was forecast to be hot, and the campground was at a lake, so I wanted to swim and perhaps lounge in shorts if the temps were high and the bugs low.

So considering the minimal use, I just want something as small and light as possible. What’s the most minimal short out there?

The lightest are probably ranger panties. Not everyone appreciates those, myself included. I have been using 5 or 7″ inseam All In Motion unlined running shorts from Target. Cheap, lightish, comfortable. 5″ unlined in large are 90g.

That’s exactly what I wanted. And I’m 1/2 Dutch, so all the better.

The argon shorts are light. Note that material has almost no stretch, so comfort may be an issue.

Th is for the heads @Brad!.

That should be fine, as this will mostly be for short time use, and I have a skinny but and legs, so they should be quite roomy on me.

If I intend to wear shorts for much hiking, I can take the ones I have now.

I like actual shorts w/ 6″ or shorter inseam (no “Man Capri’s” thank you). Also, a built-in brief, elastic waist w/ drawcord are must haves. Most “running shorts” have a zippered rear waist pocket which is less than ideal for carrying a pack. All this adds up to a hard to find short. The “best” I have currently found are from Columbia: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B096HQ8K4P?psc=1&ref=ppx_yo2ov_dt_b_product_details But of course, since they’re nearly ideal Columbia has quit making them. Amazon still has them however.

I also just ordered these to try: https://www.on.com/en-us/products/essential-shorts-m-1me1152/mens/shadow-apparel-1ME11520345
