Hi all,
Like many others, I melted the fins off my Jetboil Sol Ti. Before that, it was an amazing stove. The new ones seem vastly inferior (much heavier, maybe scratchable…). But I had the beginnings of an idea for a repair/upgrade:
I don’t like plastic bottles. There may be safety concerns (BPA has been replaced with something that may be at least as bad), and there are definitely flavour concerns. So I like my heavy titanium bottles.
The Vargo Bot (“bottle pot”) is about the same dimensions as the Sol Ti, and it’s also a titanium bottle with a lid. I was thinking of trying to Frankenstein an aluminium Jetboil pot bottom onto a Vargo Bot. Then at least those of us who like biocompatible bottles could justify the weight of the Jetboil in yet another way :)
Tricky bits:
There are a few tricky bits here, but I guess the main one is getting the two to adhere with no air pockets. Also I’m not sure yet how I’m going to remove/reattach the Jetboil pot bottom in a way that maintains the structural integrity of the attachment/windscreen thing. Obviously a pretty preliminary idea…!
Ideas? Thoughts?
I am not an engineer so take this with a grain of salt. I like the idea and will be following this thread since I too have a jet boil Ti that has melted fins… go figure.
Have you looked up the thermal expansion properties of both metals? I think you may have some issues with the difference between the 2 metals and the expansion / contractions as they heat up and cool off. Aluminum expands more then Titanium does. However I do not know the math to figure out if the difference between the 2 is small enough to not break the bond between them. https://www.engineeringtoolbox.com/linear-expansion-coefficients-d_95.html
