I have a pair of OR Ferrosi hiking pants (which I really love) that got torn a bit on one knee when I took a spill on the trail last summer — for once I wasn’t able to get my hiking pole out ahead of me in time when I took a bad step.  It’s not a very big tear, so it would be a shame to junk these pants. What’s the best way to repair them?  Some sort of a stretchy patch?  Sew the edges together?

I have had good luck with Tenacious Tape. I own a few different stretchy pants (when you are a man, sometimes you wear stretchy pants in your room. Just for fun) and have had to patch a few. Tenacious Tape stays put well, goes through the laundry well, and stretches a bit. I use the clear tape and patch it on the inside. Just turn the pants inside out and slap a Tenacious Tape patch on it.

How big is the tear?  Is it like a cut, or a hole?

Good question, dk.  The tear is an “L” about 1″ by 1″.

you could stretch them out over some form, more than they would be stretched in use

then patch with whatever.  Seam grip would work.  Let dry over night

maybe put a piece of tape on the back side to keep the fabric positioned in place.  remove tape the next day when it’s dry.  You might have to reapply another coat of seam grip to get it even and smooth

Take them to your neighbourhood tailor. They will put a patch on the inside and machine darn the front. Will only cost a few bucks and will be invisible from a few feet away

Problem with the knee area is that any irregularity could be irritating to your skin. Other solution… look on eBay for exact same… might have to keep watching for several weeks for one to come up in your size…
