So I ordered some silpoly to try my hand at a 2-door pyramid. VERY EXCITED! But the thread I got (gutermann) came like this, and it’s super floppy on the little metal male part on my machine…
Do I need to do anything about this? how do I make this larger spool of thread (too tall, hole inside too big) fit nicely on that spindle thing, or does it matter????
Mar 7, 2016 at 7:01 am #3387255it doesn’t matter, there is a thread tensioner further up on the machine.
Mar 7, 2016 at 7:08 am #3387257AH – so I just put this on the spindle and even if it’s flopping around, the tensioner fixes that, right?
whew! I have 2 spools of this and I was worried I’d ordered something I couldn’t use.
Mar 7, 2016 at 7:32 am #3387259Yeah that is correct. I just used a spool of it and it works great. The machine should control the tension not the spindle.
Go ahead and thread it up and try a sample, it should work just fine.
Mar 7, 2016 at 2:49 pm #3387396I’m no expert and what Todd says makes sense but I found it a bit annoying the rattle-ling of the loose spool so i made an adapter. Basically a small piece of properly sized tubing that I got at my local hardware store (5/16″OD – 3/16″ID worked in my case).
You can also buy “Dritz Cone Thread Adapters” but I haven’t tried those.
Edit: disregard the part about the “Dritz Cone Thread Adapters” it appears those are for much larger cones, but again the piece of tubing works well.
Mar 7, 2016 at 5:46 pm #3387441Mario that is a good point the rattle could get old. I have an old antique thread holder/rack. I used that down near the table level. It pulls the thread up to the first guide on the top of machine like it would from that spool holder. Then the spool doesn’t spin, the thread just unwinds off the top.
It would be easy to rig up something. A long nail through a piece of 2×4 would work perfect, just put the spool on that and then run the thread as usual.
Mar 8, 2016 at 7:29 pm #3387697The newer machines, like the Singer 44S Classic, have a different arrangement for feeding thread off the ends of these spools. A thread stand like this one:
would allow the thread to spool off the end. It’s not an absolute necessity. A piece of vinyl tubing that will fit over the spindle will help.
Edit: Spelling
