Hello!
Any opinions out there whether or not it is better to go with a HMG pod over the Sea to Summit eVent compression sack when using a HMG pack? My goal is to compress and keep a down sleeping bag dry. Would the eVent be more water resistant than the pod? -guessing the pod would be less lumpy and fit the pack better than the eVent??
Yes, I am aware that the HMG pod costs more.THANKS!
.dOct 22, 2019 at 6:30 pm #3615243I use the HMG pods, but they don’t really compare well to the eVent compression sacks. The pods are not compression sacks, and I suspect you will damage the zippers if you put too much in one. I put my quilt in the pod in its stuff sack, but it’s not compressed a lot like it would be in the eVent sack. The e-Vent is better for water resistance. The pods are water resistant, but it does have a zipper and is not completely air tight.

Oct 23, 2019 at 12:14 am #3615285I use a Z-packs medium-plus dry bag for my sleeping quilt in a Windrider 2400. It does a great job creating the structure across the bottom with side-side pressure. This is important otherwise the HMG pack can barrel quite easily. My first attempt at packing by just stuffing the quilt into the bottom did this:
I wish I had a photo using the dry-bag. I’ve wondered if the POD would be even better, but the Zpacks dry bag is half the price and less weight.
Oct 23, 2019 at 6:42 am #3615328The pods are very efficient and can be stuffed very full without excessive strain to the zipper or seams. Just be careful while zipping it up avoiding possible snags to your sleeping bag. Being not fully airtight, your sleeping bag will expand after being fully compressed and zipped. This is nice as it won’t stay completely compressed the entire duration. If your doing any kind of extended water travel, this might not be desirable. I use Zpacks 5 degree down 3/4 zip and the large pod has more capacity than the OEM dry bag Zpacks sends you. When I received the sleeping bag it was actually stuffed in the compression dry bag after a 2 week shipping time and the sewn seams were literally separating. Although only water resistant I have never had any moisture issues from outside leakage inside the pod let alone my HMG 3400 SW. Even in pouring down rain.
