I like the concept of a space blanket more than the reality. I’ve never, ever used one. But a Hefty yard bag or a trash-compactor bag (which is sturdier)? Those I’ve used lots of times for keeping gear dry, doing a food hang, carrying water, making a basin in the in dirt, as an emergency poncho and for packing out (other people’s) litter.
I carry a space blanket or polycyro sheet when doing longer or more remote dayhikes but when I’m backpacking I’ve got my tarp with me so I don’t really see the need for a space blanket. Even if my tarp failed in dramatic fashion, I think I’d be better off improvising with it than a Mylar sheet. Also I’ve got my pack liner, pack, maybe a rain skirt… Lots of options I’d use before a space blanket.
