Companion forum thread to: Hell’s Canyon Idaho
We began at Pittsburg Landing with the plan to catch a boat ride 25 miles upstream to Granite Creek. Fate, however, had a detour in mind…

Wow.. awesome video and awesome trip. Whata beautiful place hike and sleep! I never even thought of Idaho for a destination to hike, but I think I want to check it out now!!
Jul 13, 2023 at 11:12 am #3785183Right after COVID my son and I got dropped off at McAfee Cabin just down from the dam.  Two bear encounters, totally untread “trail” as with COVID there was zero people for months and grass was waist high, an unknown number of snakes encounters  as you couldn’t see them unless my son was following and watching my foot steps. There were at least 10 “almost” steps, but the worst part was the spiders on every living plant.  I do a lot of back country on and off trails. We both thought this was horrific and booked it out as far as we could given the complete lack of trail until you reached the Kirkwood campground 6 miles from the trail head.  Then ….. We looked at the pictures when we got out and they were stunning. So, might go back …. Owyhee river area is next on the Idaho list though.

Jul 14, 2023 at 1:09 pm #3785225Thanks for posting – I’m especially grateful that you weren’t trying to video when the trail was narrow. And I’m REALLY sympathetic to the snake thing…I’m okay if I see them from a distance, but when you’re about to put your foot down and see one I understand the “defying gravity” thing and flying! I once put my hammock up and then headed off to poop in the woods. I was about 6 feet from my hammock and came across a copperhead curled up just minding his own business. The urge instantly left me and I went and moved my hammock to another set of trees a hundred feet away. I knew I wouldn’t be able to sleep in that location knowing I was probably close to its den and being on the other side of the campsite made me feel better.
