I am trying to move from hot cereal ( which I really don’t care for ) in the mornings at camp and want something healthier than the current pop tarts on the market. I do NOT want a breakfast bar full of nuts and berries. I have to be careful of all the fiber during a trip, and bars are one of them. Does anyone have a recipe similar to a pop tart that I can have with coffee? Bagels, etc have been done. I am looking more in the pastry idea.
Thanks!
ps…yes I know pop tarts are not healthy but you get the idea….
Sep 25, 2016 at 8:32 am #3427981Please forgive me for not answering the question directly but have you tried the pop tarts available at Trader Joe’s and Whole Foods? I’m not a pop tart fan so I’ve not tried them myself…
Sep 25, 2016 at 9:44 am #3427993No, I haven’t. I could look at them and see what’s in them. Thanks!
Sep 25, 2016 at 9:54 pm #3428097I would bet that chocolate brownies would be healthier than pop tarts, especially if you made them yourself.
Sep 26, 2016 at 1:02 am #3428112If you’re looking for something with fruit stuff sandwiched between pastry layers, then just making your own pastry (or a brioche type dough), spreading preserves between layers of it, then baking might work. But if you just want something carb-y and sweet, a dense muffin might be the way to go. Could even make them with almond meal instead of flour, for extra protein.
Sep 26, 2016 at 4:43 am #3428119I like the brownie idea! Ha! And, Doug, thanks for the recipes via email. Truffles with protein powder is my kind of meal. I did find a few recipes…very simple, as dk mentioned. I just wondered if anyone has a tried and true recipe. I guess I need to get my oven element fixed now. This is hiking season for me!
Sep 27, 2016 at 8:50 am #3428280Starbucks is selling some expensive but tasty “pop tarts” right now. I’ve tried the strawberry ones and they are really good. They are basically pie dough with sweeter than usual strawberry jam inside (but way less sweet than an actual Pop Tart).
I keep thinking I should try making them myself. But as I wrote this I realized maybe some empanadas would work instead. Or around here in New Mexico they call them “pastelitos”. Basically pie dough with peach, apricot, apple, etc. filling inside (anything you want really, but they have more filling compared to a pop tart.) I can’t find the recipe I used to use but the NYT has one: http://cooking.nytimes.com/recipes/1014156-dried-fruit-pastelitos Instead of making one big pastry and cutting into squares, you could cut the dough smaller and fully wrap each one so it is less likely to leak. Now I’m totally going to make these before we go camping next. :-) And you could buy pre-made pie dough, too, to make life easier.
Sep 28, 2016 at 5:00 am #3428429Rachel, making a savory pie too, would make a nice lunch or dinner. I am not a long distance hiker, so something like these little pies would be good for 2-3 nighters. I could make a chocolate pie and have it for dessert. : )
Sep 28, 2016 at 5:27 pm #3428516We reviewed one flavour of Clif bars some time ago:
https://backpackinglight.com/forums/topic/65191/Very solid things. My wife like the one we tried. Very popular here in Oz among all the pushbike riders.
Cheers
