I’ve been re-reading some old Ray-Way books, and in the original Tarp Book he mentions 12′ for ridge lines, and I was curious (for those of you with the Kit) what are the lengths of the other lines such as corner, sides, and mid-panels?

    JW,

These are the lengths I have  from Ray’s book on tarps.  Lengths are per guy:

    Ridge guys 10′

    Corner guys 4 1/2′

    Side guys 3 1/2′

    Beak guys 3′

    Lifter yokes 5 1/2′

    Lifter guys 8′

This is how I built/sewed my tarp.

Thank you Jason. I have all the books too and the book you quote, but I was looking for the lengths he gives in the “Tarp Kit” instructions, rather than the books, as I think they are different. As a note, he says 10′ ridges in the earlier days/books and then upped it to 12′ later on. The Kit is the latest version of the Tarp info, and so I just wanted to know what is says in the Kit for reference. Cheers.

I made a couple of 2P and a 3P RayWay tarp, following his designs (I started with a 2P kit), with varying tie-out lengths.  It really doesn’t make much of a difference once they are long enough for your highest pitch.  And the lines weigh very little.  You can cut them down at home or in the field if you feel they are too long.  But I’ve never had a problem that the lines are too long, but on occasion I wished one or more of them was a little longer, typically when stringing the ridge between trees.

I suppose if they are way too long you can get all kinds of tangles when putting the tarp up.
