I’m planning to do the Outer Mtn Loop in Big Bend in 4 weeks. On the off chance the gov’t is still shut down, I need a backup plan.
This is to be something “epic”. I live in Alabama and typically hike in the south Cumberlands or section hike on the AT, but once or twice a year I like to drive somewhere west for something different. FWIW I’m already planning to do Zion in early October.
Where could I go within 24 hours or so driving distance that won’t be affected by our collective idiots shutting down our National Parks? If my partner comes as planned and we can split up the driving, I’m willing to go as far as Utah or New Mexico. Looking for something 5-6 days, ideally but not necessarily a loop. TIA.
