I’ve been using a Brunton ADC Wind for years. It has a wind meter and displays time/date/temp. They don’t make them any more. They also make compasses.
The back battery cover broke, so I just use tape to keep it in place:
I would call this jury rigged, but not jerry rigged :)
I contacted Brunton and asked them if they had any covers but they said no, they don’t make them any more.
Then, out of the blue, I got an email asking me for my address, so they sent me a new one, plus a second one because those covers keep failing. No charge:
Slightly different color which doesn’t matter.
On the other hand, my Garmin GPS battery cover broke. I called them and they said they could send me a new cover, but it would cost $30 or something. I just jury rigged something with a nail that I bent and epoxied onto the cover.
Call me a cheapskate. I should have just paid them the $30.
Another time I called them about a software problem which they quite helpfully told me how to fix.
I used their pocket transits a long time ago to make geology maps. They’re very solidly built. A niche market even smaller than lightweight backpackers. I’m surprised they still make the same unit.
My dad had a pocket transit. I liked the binoculars. I still have a Garmin eTrex. Well built. Good company, but it seems they want to charge you everything they can. Expensive to start with, then they charge for software. They more or less have a monopoly.
