Actually, I use a Klean Kanteen that’s an older version of this:
https://www.kleankanteen.com/products/water-bottle-wide-mouth-40-oz
And a Camelbak that’s something like this:
I’m open to using different bottles, but I kind of like the idea of the steel one (for health reasons, so as to not drink out of plastic). Would ideally like to be able to carry 2 1L bottles.
The next challenge would be choosing a fanny/waist/lumbar/hip pack that would be good for sliding the pockets/holsters onto.
I like Bill’s sling/hybrid creativity, but I really prefer just a fanny/lumbar/waist/hip pack for day-longs. And my former system (fanny pack with two pockets/holsters slid onto both sides of the belt) worked well. (Though if there’s a fanny pack with built-in bottle pockets that work well and allow me to carry 2L or close to it, I’d be happy to try that.)

I typically do that with one bottle pocket and the other bottle in a bag (so that it cannot fall out). I just swap them when one is empty.
Monte’s suggestion was that the canteen carries better because of the flat shape, which moves the weight closer to the body. I have never tried it because I assumed that they were heavy. Monte’s 3 ounce version sounds more appealing.
Using a lumbar pack as your belt is a great idea, Aaron! Clip on whatever extra pockets you need.

Sold as 32oz but marked only to 30 oz, will hold at least 32oz
The “real” 32 oz is marked to 32 oz, holds at least 34 oz and is ~ 2-3 mm wider and maybe a cm taller than the 30 oz.
Jan 20, 2025 at 1:51 am #3826728The only store in Norway that sells HMG (to my knowledge) just made an announcement they’ll be closing shop.
There’s probably quite a few things I should have bought on their closeout sale (they were probably the only shop to have EE as well), but I focused on the items I’d already considered. Trying to do a good deal on something I haven’t already looked into, just because it’s on sale, rarely works out for me.And maybe it didn’t this time, anyway. Even previously, when I’ve almost bought a fanny pack, I’ve been struggling to get a good impression of the two sizes and make up my mind about which one to get. By the time I became aware of this sale there were only Vice Versa’s available, vaguely believing that I read somewhere in this thread that smaller is (always?)better, sprinkle that with some FOMO on top and the choice was much easier this time.
Oh my was it small though. Initial impression is that it might be too small to be worthwhile bringing along, but come summer I’ll give it a try. Conclusion to follow.
Jan 20, 2025 at 6:57 am #3826733It may be safer for your wallet and keys than a larger one that gets opened more often.
Jan 20, 2025 at 10:16 am #3826739I guess that could become relevant in certain situations, but the intention was to use it as a companion to a backpack exactly for the items I need more frequent/quicker access to. E.g. photo equipment and fishing gear. Keys and wallet are not such items.
I wont rule out the possibility that it could be used for fast and light day hikes in the summer, where I just need a place to stash a few items. In such a use case, where it would be my only bag, it’s not unlikely that it will hold a couple of important items. That’s a very rare use case for me though, and quite away off from how I intended to use it. So while possibly an added benefit – it’s not one that carries much weight (yet).
Jan 20, 2025 at 1:11 pm #3826753Apologies if this has already been mentioned, but Nordic skiers frequently use lumbar packs, so you might want to look at some skiing-oriented brands (Swix, etc.)
