I sewed an apron and used that as a way to carry extra stuff. It worked really well but looked sort of dorky. I also had to add features to make it sit right on my body.
I used these instructions. http://www.make-it-do.com/sew-it/garden-apron-tutorial/ You could probably find something similar at a garden supply store. I don’t see why something like this couldn’t be totally useful for backcountry trips. I mean, what if you have to carry actual garden tools like a saw and some clippers? Why not use a gardening apron? And bars and snacks, phones and cameras are about the same size as a pair of clippers so why not?

But you can still get one at Home Depot for $1.48:
Try it out, if it works for you, tweak the size and maybe add velcro closures when you make one from nylon taffeta or cuben fabric.

I’d scavenge a pocket off an old pair of jeans, and sew it on to my upper right thigh on the outside, kind of where an old-west gunslinger would have his Colt Army revolver. I’d sub-divide it into two narrow and one wider pocket for a Phillips screwdriver, a slotted, and a razor knife – the only three hand tools I needed to have handy.
No belt, no tool belt, no extra bulk.

Didn’t that hurt and bleed everywhere?Cheers
May 2, 2019 at 4:25 pm #3591365For the last three years or so I have used the first generation dyneema gridstop ThruPack Summit Bum. I like the concept of a fanny pack very much, wearing it in front over my waist belt or with a backpack w/o a waist belt, depending on the pack I am using. I like being able to remove my waistbelt pockets since when overstuffed I find my arms sometimes brush against them as I swing them back and forth, with or without hiking poles. The Summit Bum is handy also that I can keep key items with me when I am not wearing my backpack. But at 5″ tall, 10″ wide, and 3″ deep it was bigger than I needed and I found that it tended to bounce against my privates which could be irritating.
So I recently asked Paul at ThruPack to make a custom size Summit Bum UL (DCF) with taped seams which is 4 1/4″ tall, 9″ wide and 3″ deep, plenty big for my needs. I also had him include the rigging allowing it to be worn either as a fanny pack or as a chest pack. The weight of it alone is expected to be 2 oz and with my existing “comfy strap” 4 oz. I will receive it early next week and expect that to use it on all of my trips, short or long. I’ll include a photo when it arrives.

Jul 18, 2019 at 5:54 pm #3602493He does both belts- but you need to eliminate the belt on the fanny pack and clip it on.
Liteaf offers a fanny with detachable belt for 40. (but no photos of it or the clip system, which is odd)

Jul 18, 2019 at 8:50 pm #3602510i wear a super light fanny pack turned around so that its’ a belly pack. Perfect for carrying my steripen, map and lunch. And as David says, perfect for day hikes.
Jul 20, 2019 at 3:59 pm #3602703I can’t bring myself to use the term f****** pack, here it has a different and much coarser meaning. But if you mean a bum bag I have a big one that I keep all my little things in and when wearing my pack it sits in front just as Todd T does
I can’t bring myself to use either term because they both sound undignified. Somebody should add 3 ounces of PALS strips to butch it up, make it in camo, and give it a new name. Then I could buy one and cut off the PALS strips to save weight.
