Im connecting a few trails in the Colombia Gorge around Eagle Creek to do a long weekend of backpacking.  Its obvious I will see plenty of water, but accessible is it from the trail?

In other words, what are the water sources along the trail like?  Do I need to carry several liters or will I be able to fill up often?

If you are familiar with the area, any other tips would be appreciated. Going there in mid May.

    Thanks!

    Daved,

For water, you will have no problems. Most Gorge trails, including Eagle Creek, follow a steep main creek-valley, crossing multiple side streams and often crossing the main creek a few times.

Aside from the water situation, you still need to plan for snow, debris and downed trees to be on the upper portions of the trails, probably starting around 2000 – 2500 feet. Some trails can still be followed without too much trouble, but it is very easy to lose a trail in the Gorge in those conditions. This is one of the frustrating things about the PNW; some trails and roads just aren’t available as early as one hopes they will be! Feel free to PM with your itinerary and I’ll offer any info I can.

I was on Defiance last week and there was snow prolly down to 3000.  At prolly 4000 to was covering the ground completely and there was a ton of debris covering any semblance of a trail.  We bailed…

Lots of people in mid May.  Maybe do Herman Creek instead?  Not as many waterfalls though.

Park next to the fish hatchery at the front – a little less likely to get broken into

Occasional trip reports at oregonhikers.org for recent conditions
