A friend of mine hiked the PCT SOBO last year with a pocket tarp and he said it was his favorite piece of gear. He reported the door-less model was rainworthy with proper campsite selection. Campsite selection is my favorite part of backpacking. Seriously, I love trying to find little sheltered nooks to sleep. It’s my favorite thing. So I bought the model without doors on his recommendation.
Just in case, though, I made a door. It should help in rain, and also provide privacy or trap in warmth if it’s too cold without the door. My plan is to not use the door unless I need it. Also, I was just in the mood to make something.
except when I discover after a heavy rain that it pools up or a “stream” appears that flows into my site, but my stupidity for not figuring that out ahead of time : )
